The /home directory of machine A is backed up into the directory /dumpdir/dumps00 on machine B by the following script:

#! /bin/sh
dumpsno=00
level=930
/sbin/dump -$level -A /root/dump.log/dump$level \
-uf - /home | /usr/bin/bzip2 \
| /usr/bin/ssh 192.168.1.122 \
dd of=/dumpdir/dumps$dumpsno/mydump$level

Here 192.168.1.122 is the static IP address of machine B (note that an IP address starting with 192.168. ... is for local networks, and can be reused by each network). The shell variable level in this example is given the value 930, but it changes with each backup. I start with level 0, and then 990, 999, 998, ..., 991, 980, 989, 988, ..., 981, 970, 979, .... To make this run with smoothly, I allow the root of machine A to ssh to the root of machine B without password.

On one occasion I had to restore the /home directory on a new Linux machine, since my original machine A died. I put the disk with the backups as a second hard drive of the new machine, and used the following script:

#! /bin/sh
dumpsno=00
cd /home
level=0
cat /dumpdir/dumps$dumpsno/mydump$level | /usr/bin/bunzip2 | \
restore -r /home -f -
level=900
cat /dumpdir/dumps$dumpsno/mydump$level | /usr/bin/bunzip2 | \
restore -r /home -f -
level=906
cat /dumpdir/dumps$dumpsno/mydump$level | /usr/bin/bunzip2 | \
restore -r /home -f -

This example used backups of level 0, level 900, and level 906 to restore the home directory. With the numbering outlined above, any restore needs at most three levels of backups.

Attila

too much hassle.. just download and put it on usb ...

too much hassle.. just download and put it on usb using unetbootin or other such utility... and keep reusing your usb...

Mehul J.
